Technology Can Spoil Our Kids But Only If We Let It
Right now, even average income families have a lot of gadgets inside their homes. This is because even with a small budget, families can afford the technology luxuries such as home theater systems and gaming consoles.
On the up side, it saves mall-going cash. We can watch movies and play games inside our homes without going to the mall and arcades. On the down side, we become lazy (walking around the mall is good exercise!), we consume too much electricity, and most of all, we become dependent on technology too much. I remember how freaked we were when we suddenly lost electricity and we didn’t have anything to entertain our baby with. Sure a game of scrabble is always available but would you believe it… we got so used to the online version that the actual board game seems boring now.
Watching movies at home is awesome, though. We get to eat as many buckets of popcorn as we want, and we can always press pause whenever someone needed to go to the rest room. It relieves stress and it saves time. Although, we still go to the movies whenever we can just for the surround sound that we don’t have at home.
However, lately the hubby and I decided to teach AJ the very basic board games like snakes and ladders, chess, scrabble, boggle and ‘pick up sticks’ so that he will at least be able to participate when his classmates bring board games to school.
Getting spoiled by technology is one of the issues that come with growing up in a techie family, but it doesn’t mean we cannot do anything about this. Right?
