Are Moms Psychic? How to Deal With Excessive Crying in Infants

July 10, 2009 in Baby Basics, New Mom Tips

Newborns are the cutest when they’re laughing, but when they cry, things get out of hand. The problem is that babies cannot tell you what they need. They can’t stroke the part that hurts. They can only cry and cry until you figure out what’s wrong. That’s why I said moms could be psychic. Usually, our instincts are right.

“Oh, he’s hungry”
“It’s tummy ache”
“His nappy’s too tight”
“He wet himself”

These are the usual things that come to mind when baby won’t stop crying. Unless, of course, you’re a mom who hits the search bar when something goes wrong, and looks for baby heartburn symptoms (like me). I do this a few minutes before we rush to the hospital, when baby won’t stop crying for an hour or so.

Older folks might shrug it off and say “it’s infant gas, don’t worry too much”, but new moms wouldn’t know that at first right?

Frankly, even before I learned what colic acid is, I seem to know automatically that baby’s tummy is painful. The first thing I do is to burp him a few more times, and it usually works. Next, we make sure his feeding bottle is well-sealed and the milk coming down from the nipple doesn’t have too many air bubbles. Usually, we stop feeding before the milk runs out so he won’t have to swallow any air bubbles.

The good news is that babies will often have these symptoms only during the first few months, then they just magically go away.
