Why People Are Still Surprised I Studied Biology
When I meet people and the subject of college courses come up, I always manage to shock people when I reveal that I studied Biology in college. First, I get the look that says “why aren’t you a doctor”, then the question “so what does it have to do with internet marketing”. Most of the time, I simply laugh and answer flippantly “I didn’t study medicine because I didn’t want to spend 10 years to be a nurse”… by the way, it’s a standard joke here in the Philippines, as most doctors take up nursing because it’s more lucrative in terms of job availability and wages.
I studied Biology because I love figuring out how things work. Even as a child I would wonder how plants give birth to seeds while people give birth to tiny people called babies. I also wondered why people use certain things for cooking, like herbs and spices and how these affect taste (I grew up in a party caterer family). Most of all, I learned how mating among animals is the same as mating among people, but with less hypocrisy and mind games.
How does this knowledge help me now that I took to earning my wage online? Well, for one thing I have a clear idea of how herbal medicines like Stimerex ES or Acai berry work. I also know more about pheromones than the average person so I can probably create a love potion that can actually work (lol, don’t ask).
What I realize now is this: things happen no matter how many times you double check your plans. In reality, we tend to follow the path to happiness no matter what we do. I could have been a doctor and still not be a mom by now (because I would have wanted to earn millions to make up for the millions that my folks would have spent on my education), but in the end, I really just wanted to be where I can laugh as I want and do as I want.
