Working Online for Moms: A Big Leap
Motherhood is definitely a life-changing event. At first you don’t know how to balance work and family life, then you become resourceful. Either you hire a nanny who can take care of your kids while you work, or you decide to work online. I chose the latter.
Working online is not stress-free, but the idea is you’re always there to lend a hand if your child needs your help with something. Making adjustments is crucial if you want to keep your sanity. After all, working online at home is still “working”, which means you need to allot a huge chunk of your time to your “job”.
Regardless of how difficult it is to find money through a home business, more moms are choosing to start their own online businesses so they can be there for their kids and still contribute to the family income.
Self-employment offers a certain amount of flexibility. You also need to self-study a lot, since you don’t have a senior co-worker to show you the ropes. Pretty soon, your head will be filled with concepts of one way links, blogging for a business, freelancing and information product creation.
But I can tell you this… starting an online business has a number of advantages for moms. These include:
1. Low start up cost.
Even if you do this part time, starting an online business is usually within reach financially. Setting up a website and buying some software are often all that’s needed to get started, and that can be accomplished for a few hundred dollars or less.
2. No More Regular Hours
A home business will challenge your capability to manage your time, but this is do-able enough if you have a set routine for feeding your kids and doing chores. The trick is not to take too many projects if you know you can’t finish by the deadline. The reason why you wanted to work at home is to avoid as much stress as possible, so prioritize your projects well.
You can work early in the morning before the kids get up, during the baby’s nap, or late at night when everyone is in bed.
3. You can earn while you sleep
A lot of things online can be automated. If you’re going out, you can schedule your posts to appear in intervals over the rest of the week. Or, you can use an autoresponder to send email campaigns daily by setting it up once a month. If you’re selling information products, orders can be processed and virtual products delivered while you are sleeping or taking care of the kids.
Take the plunge. It’s easy once you get the hang of it.
