How College Grads Land Jobs: Hard Work and Credentials
Here’s something for those new graduates that want to receive tips on how to apply for companies. If you’re a smart college student, you may have started collecting information that you can add to your resume. You know, seminars, glowing recommendations from teachers and what-not.
It’s funny how your whole life can be summed up in a piece of paper. In just one glance, people will be able to tell how hard you’ve worked in the past, how patient you are in a job, and how ambitious you are. How do they know? A lot of the implied information you are giving them can be found in the work experience and skills area. This could be a problem if you’re a fresh graduate and you don’t have much work experience.
What you can do is volunteer for an event, preferably one that is related to your career. If it’s a monthly thing, make sure you volunteer every month. Besides being a great addition to your resume, you’re doing a noble thing by helping out.
There aren’t much ‘guaranteed’ things in life (except perhaps guaranteed issue life insurance companies). It doesn’t hurt to mention in your resume what the work experience taught you, which skills you’ve honed through the experience, and how you can apply these learnings to your future career. Don’t assume that just because you graduated from a good university, people will be falling all over themselves to hire you.
